This past Saturday InterVarsity Faith@Work hosted a half-day conference on the topic of Calling and Career. Students from five campuses and several young professionals participated in the part-workshop part-interactive discussion around three key areas:
  • Our primary calling to follow God and become the best version of ourselves
  • Discovering the ingredients for a good discernment process for the future
  • Learning how to communicate your unique design in a hiring situation- what makes you unique?

Entrepreneur and Senior Pastor of First Baptist San Diego Scott Furrow talked about spending less energy on figuring out what job or career field you should be in, and rather focus on being a blessing to the people in your path. He talked about how everyone has an 'Oikos' (Greek word meaning household), 7-15 people in our relational world that we have the opportunity and responsibility to build trusting friendships with to point them towards Christ.

Our attempt at a World Cafe was a hit. Three rounds of roundtable discussion focusing on the question: How do I figure out what to do with my life?Using conversation, drawing, and connecting links and themes from each others perspectives we discovered the right themes and areas to focus on in a good discernment process for the future. If you'd like to participate in the reflective questions and worksheets that conference attenders used during a half-hour reflective session, go here.

Finally, branding expert Denise Lee Yohn led a session called Brand You: Who Do You Say You Are. Using the concept of a 'Competitive Positioning Statement', she facilitated more self-reflection by thinking through how to communicate effectively our personal sense of calling to the marketplace where people are in hiring positions. Moving beyond broad and vague descriptions for who we are, such as "I really love people and want to make a difference in the world" to specific, clear and succinct phrases will greatly help a job search process.

Thank you for all who were able to come, and for those who didn't, don't hesitate to ask for help and guidance as you walk forward in discovering God's calling for your life. We are here to help awaken you to God's purpose in your life to become spiritual leader

This simple-living project focused on helping average folks break free from the constraints of excessive consumerism. Dave’s story of downsizing and pursuing what really matters in life is thoughtful, funny, and highly practical. His remedy for people who feel “stuck in stuff” is easy to understand and obtain.

"InterVarsity put on the “Unleash Creativity” conference to help students connect the valuable components of faith and business, and explain how the two are interdependent for success.
The creativity conference also analyzed the metaphorical “box” that business culture places students into. The main goal of the conference was to help students break out of the “box” of deadlines, supervisors, pressures, monotony and meaninglessness to attain the more intrinsic goal of strengthening one’s faith...."Read More

"I am so excited that I got to be a part of the first annual Faith and Business Conference... It was one of the most refreshing and renewing experiences that I have had recently. I really felt that God met me through the people that I was surrounded by, the conversations that I had, and the message that the speakers gave. There are  many things that I am going to be taking away from the conference, however, two of the main things are: a group of new friends that I can grow and learn from. As well as, the knowledge that there is a bridge between business oriented people and ministry oriented people; this bridge comes in the form of language. Everyone speaks a different language and in order to get your message across you need to make sure that you are speaking the same language. It was a fantastic day, and I hope that more people can come next year to gain the confidence and tools to step out of the things that are holding them back from their true potential as a person of God and a person living in a business world."-- Erica Hollern, USD class of 2011

"The conference was an inspirational look at what the brighter side of what office work could be. They had some great speakers tell different personal stories about how faith had changed their office and another great professional speak about how he used scripture to build better businesses. The breakout groups were interesting and application oriented and the whole conference was a great networking experience." -- Ian Daly, UCSD class of 2011
